This month: Avocado
Avocado might actually be the trendiest vegetable of the moment!
This does not come as a surprise. In addition to its wonderful taste, an avocado is very healthy. Avocado contains healthy fats, which your body needs to be able to function well.
Note that avocados are rich in calories, so don’t overeat!
How can you tell if an avocado is ripe?
You should be able to gently press the avocado at the tip. When it is ripe, but you are not planning on eating the avocado yet, keep it in the refrigerator. That way the vegetable stays good for days. Another way to test whether an avocado is ripe, is to remove the brown kernel in the top. Is it still green underneath, then it is not yet ripe, if it is brown, the avocado is ripe.
If the avocado is well ripe, you can simply pull the skin off. Note: once it has been cut, the avocado turns brown very quickly. Drizzle with lemon juice to prevent discoloration. You can keep a cut avocado in the refrigerator in foil for another day or two.
How to speed up the ripening process
Put the avocado together with a banana in a plastic bag. The banana ensures that the avocado ripens faster. This process takes at least one day.
Avocado makes a good combination with fish. Combine it as an appetizer or snack with a drink.
